A University of Alberta scientist’s once-in-a-lifetime dinosaur discovery in Croatia has turned into a nightmare after a rival team of European researchers raced to the site of the find and published their own study — without crediting the Canadian and his colleagues.

The dispute has exploded in the pages of the Nature, one of the world’s leading science publications, with U of A paleontologist Michael Caldwell decrying the “intellectual theft” of his team’s discovery of 10 fossilized footprints from a 95-million-year-old titanosaur.

The trackway was found during a 2004 research project — funded partly by the Canadian government agency NSERC and National Geographic — on the Croatian island of Hvar. Caldwell was leading a search by scientists from the Edmonton university and Croatia’s main natural history museum for traces of prehistoric marine lizards when they “stumbled” upon the trail of 30-centimetre-long dinosaur footprints along a rocky shoreline that was once limestone mud.

The long-necked, plant-eating titanosaurs were among the largest of the dinosaurs, up to 20 metres in length and weighing 10 tonnes. The discovery on Hvar — which has helped prove the island was linked to North Africa before drifting to its present position off the Balkan coast — was particularly significant because it was the first dinosaur discovery in the region and it added millions of years to the time frame of the species’ existence.

Caldwell and his team announced the discovery at a press conference in the Croatian capital of Zagreb in 2004. Team members had been compiling research results for a planned journal article when they learned in January they’d been “scooped” by a competing group of scientists.

Led by University of Zagreb paleontologist Aleksander Mezga, a team of four Croatian scientists and one Swiss researcher published an eight-page article about the Hvar titanosaur tracks in the December edition of the British-based scientific journal Cretaceous Research.

The article trumpets the discovery with a string of superlatives, proclaiming it the first dinosaur footprint find along the Croatian coast, as well as the “geologically youngest” and largest specimens ever found in the area.

There was no mention of the Canadian-Croatian team’s discovery of the site. And while Mezga told Nature that “every single word” of the journal article “is our intellectual property,” he admitted making no attempt to contact Caldwell and his team prior to publication.
“If they had mentioned us by name, it would have been clear they were publishing our discovery,” Caldwell told CanWest News Service on Thursday. “They avoided doing so for obvious reasons.”

Caldwell said he expects “sanctions will be forthcoming” and that the parent company of the journal, Elsevier, is considering his team’s demand for a formal retraction of the article.

Asked if reporting of a discovery is subject to time limits, Caldwell replied by e-mail: “Absolutely not — no time limits in paleontology. In fact, Mezga and his team submitted their manuscript before we had gotten the permits from the Croatian Ministry of Science to remove the specimens and rock samples from the country.

“We failed to do nothing — except to realize we were being scooped.”

End of oil heralds climate pain

Many people think that running out of oil, or "peak oil", would be good for the climate. In his new book The Last Oil Shock, David Strahan begs to differ; he suggests it may bring catastrophe.

It is becoming increasingly clear that global oil production will soon go into terminal decline, with potentially devastating economic consequences.
Although the idea of peak oil has traditionally been ridiculed by the industry, now even some of the world's most senior oilmen concede the case.

Last year Thierry Desmarest, chairman of Total, the world's fourth largest oil company, declared that production would peak by around 2020.

He urged governments to find ways to suppress oil demand growth and put off the witching hour.

Other forecasters are convinced the peak date is even closer.

But many environmentalists continue to resist the idea.

Some seem to suspect that anybody who argues that oil production is set to fall must be a closet climate change denier with a secret agenda.

It is quite possible to run out of oil and pollute the planet to destruction simultaneously

Others, like Stephen Tindale of Greenpeace, instinctively distrust forecasts of an imminent peak, but wish fervently that it would come soon.
"Let's hope that the oil does run out", he told me, "and that the world has to develop alternatives to oil seriously quickly, and from a climate point of view that would be an excellent outcome."

Neither position could be more wrong.

Dirty growth

It is mathematically impossible that peak oil will solve climate change.

Although oil is the biggest single source of energy-related greenhouse gases, coal and gas combined are bigger still, and the expected growth in their emissions would overwhelm any reduction from oil.

As I demonstrate in The Last Oil Shock using the International Energy Agency's "business-as-usual" forecast, even if oil production peaks in 2010 and immediately starts to fall at 3% a year, total emissions would still rise by 25%, reaching 32 billion tonnes in 2030.

Yet by that time, we need to be well on the way to at least a 60% cut in emissions.

Oil depletion has the capacity to worsen emissions and destroy the wealth needed to fight global warming

So it is quite possible to run out of oil and pollute the planet to destruction simultaneously.
In fact peak oil could even make emissions worse if it drives us to exploit the wrong kinds of fuel.

Burning rainforest and peatlands to create palm oil plantations for biofuels releases vast amounts of CO2, and has already made Indonesia, according to some ways of calculating it, the world's third biggest emitter after the US and China.

Synthetic transport fuels made from natural gas using the Fischer-Tropsch process emit even more carbon on a well-to-wheels basis than conventional crude; and when the feedstock is coal, the emissions double.

None of these alternatives are likely to fill the gap left by conventional crude - at least, not in time.

But because they are so much more carbon intensive, it is quite easy to conjure scenarios in which we still suffer fuel shortages while emitting even more CO2 than in the current business-as-usual forecast - the worst of all possible worlds.

Land fill

Although these fuels are likely to prove inadequate, we may be driven to use them because cleaner alternatives are even more inadequate, for a variety of reasons.

Biofuels can be produced sustainably and with real CO2 reductions, but in the industrialised world there simply isn't the land.

In the developing world, however, there are vast swathes of land which could be put to sugar cane in a sustainable fashion; but the scale of the task of replacing crude oil would still be monumental.

I calculate that to substitute the fuel lost through a post-peak oil production annual decline of 3% would mean planting about 200,000 sq km - equivalent to the land area of Cuba, Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea - every year.

Alternatively, if we decided to run Britain's road transport system, say, on cleanly produced hydrogen - electrolysing water using non-CO2-emitting forms of generation - our options would be:

or a wind farm bigger than the entire southwest region of England.
Price sores

When oil production starts to fall, the economic impacts could well be devastating.

Soaring crude prices could tip the world into a depression deeper than that of the 1930s, and collapsing stock markets cripple our ability to finance the expensive clean energy infrastructure we need.
As the unemployment lines grow, the political will to tackle climate change may be sapped by the need to keep the lights burning as cheaply as possible.

Many environmentalists seem to dismiss or ignore peak oil because they simply cannot see it as significant when compared to climate change.

But this is to miss the point.

Oil depletion is deadly serious in its own right, but it also has the capacity both to worsen emissions and destroy the wealth needed to fight global warming.

For this reason - among others - it too has the power to destroy our civilisation.

An action against the climate change.

Take on February 1st part in one of the biggest actions against climate change forced by the people.
L'Alliance pour la Planète (a group of environmental activists http://www.lalliance.fr/ ) calls to all civilians:

Make our planet rest for five minutes!
Everybody is requested to dimm his/her lights for five minutes between 7.55pm and 8.00pm on February first. This not only to save energy for five minutes, but to bring out a message that will attract the attention of politicians and leaders. It is time for them to take action and avoid the waste of energy.

During 5 minutes we'll give the planet rest: it doesn't take long and it won't cost you a thing. And it will make a statement before federal elections that we as citizens want climate on the agenda.

And why February 1st?

Because on that day a new file from climatological experts from the United Nations will be published in Paris. Because it is with our neighbors it is impossible to let this opportunity slip! We have to get attention to the urgent matter of the worlds climatological situation. If everybody takes part in this action it will have an effect on media and politics that might have a real influence, this would be good on such short notice before the (Belgian) elections!

Clair Cameron Patterson (1922 - 1995) was a geochemist born in Mitchellville, Iowa, United States. He graduated from Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa.

Patterson developed the uranium-lead dating method, and using lead and uranium isotopic data from the Canyon Diablo meteorite, he calculated an age for the Earth of 4.55 billion years; a figure far more accurate than those that existed at the time and one that has remained unchanged for over 50 years.

Patterson had first encountered lead contamination in the late 1940s as a graduate student at the University of Chicago. While using a new method of lead isotope measurement to determine the age of the Earth, he found his rock samples to be contaminated. At the time, the source of the contamination was a mystery.

Campaign against lead poisoning

After the completion of this work, Patterson immediately returned to the problem of his initial experiment and the contamination he had found. He determined through ice-core samples from Greenland that atmospheric lead levels had begun to increase steadily and dangerously soon after tetra-ethyl lead began to see widespread use in fuel, when it was to discovered to reduce engine "knock" in internal combustion engines. Patterson subsequently identified this, along with the various other uses of lead in manufacturing, as the cause of the contamination of his samples, and because of the significant public-health implications of his findings, he devoted the rest of his life to removing as much introduced lead from the environment as possible.

Beginning in 1965, with the publication of Contaminated and Natural Lead Environments of Man, Patterson tried to draw public attention to the problem of contamination of the environment and the food chain with lead from industrial sources.

In this effort, he fought against the lobbying power of the Ethyl Corporation with all its influence (and the legacy of Thomas Midgley, which included tetra-ethyl lead and chlorofluorocarbons) and the lead additive industry as a whole, to ensure that lead was removed from gasoline (petroleum). In A Short History of Nearly Everything, author Bill Bryson alleges that, because of the influence of the lead industry, Patterson was excluded from a 1971 National Research Council panel on atmospheric lead contamination, and was refused contracts with many research organisations, including the supposedly neutral United States Public Health Service.

Eventually, Patterson's efforts led to the Clean Air Act of 1970, and ultimately the removal of lead from all gasoline in the United States by 1986. Reputedly, lead levels within the blood of Americans dropped by 80% soon after this^{[citation needed]}.

So as some of you know, I moved on Friday to the new place in Mississauga. Now, I am living near Square One with Robert. He's my buddy's brother who needed a room mate and the whole situation really was suitable for me too since I needed something pretty short term.

Well... apartment is nice... and the room mate seems good so far... so all is well... except for the fact that I feel like I'm living in one of these communist era towers from Novi Zagreb. Nothing to drive you to suicide like that combined with a massive traffic jam on 401 every morning. Thank God I managed to get a 407 transponder this weekend... but still... Toronto is starting to drive me crazy. Now you are really starting to understand that I miss Vancouver, my old room mate and the crystal corner. Yes... drug dealing in the alley behind our place was kind of scary, but then... every now and then we would see a happy crack dance and that would entertain us. Oh... how I miss that!

So after sitting on board an a340 for five hours and waiting to leave air can had to cancel the flight because the yvr mutts didn't deice the plane properly!
Vancouver is in pretty bad shape. Some parts of the city are out of electricity, some have no cable or internet service, but worst of all roads are icing up. We'll see if I leave tomorrow.

So air can decided to leave today after all. It is funny how you run into different people at the airport while you wait for your flight. While Marko and I were having coffee, we ran into Naf who was doing a story for CKNW.
We were all amazed how the vast majority of air can flights were cancelled while west jet happily flew without any problems.

So... Alex wanted to have some wings today... maybe because we're thinking about starting to get in shape before Christmas... so we decided to go to Sticky Fingers in Barrie. Well... the problem was when we got there, we discovered that the place was jam packed. So I failed to write in a few days... I've been bad...

So much stuff has been on published, seen on TV and in movie theatres about environment. Finally the green buzz is hitting the North American society with a great force. Even our government is facing some tough questions, so in light of that I am going to add a small article here from today's issue of NY Times. I've realised how much I've been polluting after moving to Ontario... flying around so much this year... driving waaaaaaaaaay more than usual... in Vancouver... we live in a much more compact way. Ontario is just horrible!

So Saturday night we went to a party and then we went to check out this wonderful event they had in Toronto called Nuit Blanche. Pretty much they set up all these wonderful art installations all around the city and people have only one night to see them. You set off at sunset and you have until sunrise to see what you can. I was so surprised to see how many people were out on this rainy night. We didn't hit any of the museums that offered free admission, but went over to the Philosopher's Walk between the Rom and Royal Conservatory of Music to check out the fog installation.

Well, my friend Mark really participated in the installation! Since it was rainy, it got really muddy. Mark was walking on the hill where the fog dispensers/misters were installed, he slipped and slid down the hill, got covered in mud and all the while managed to stay on the cell phone. I was standing on the bottom of the hill taking pictures and see this guy flying 20 feet down the hill on his ass... amazing. He finally stops, turns his head and I realise it's Mark. And he's still on the phone... never dropped it, never missed a beat! And then he just casually gets up and walks into the fog.

So far, had a great time in Montreal. Last night was entertaining, but now I have recovered and it's time to pack and get the heck out of here. All I can say is that these past two weeks in Montreal have been great, but after gaining some odd 10 lbs, it's time to leave.
